I wrote this at the beautiful Orcasong farm after a festival. I wanted to jam around the fire after listening to others play all weekend, so I built a fire, Aries-style, and sat waiting for others to join me. Everyone at the camp was understandably tired after the long weekend, so I sat alone at the fire for about awhile. I started doodling with my ukulele, inspired by the surrounding trees, garden, and campfire flames.

At the time, I was dating a (another! :D) very talented musician, and really struggling with envy and ego issues. I wanted to be recognized for my talents and not seen as just his partner or quiet sidekick. It has been a gigantic learning experience and hence the lines, "grow into the flame, grow into the light, of shadow's insight", and the part about growing as strong as you believe.

As I continued to play the song, it started to take shape as a song bigger than my personal struggles, and more about our society as a whole. Collectively, we are living during a time when the shadow side of humanity is very, very apparent. But so many are awakening to the insights of what this shadow reveals about us and how we can evolve.
